Frequently Asked Questions From International Students.

How do I set up a UK bank account?
Setting up a UK bank account is an essential step for international students settling into life in the UK. A local account makes it easier to pay your rent, manage your finances, receive payments from part-time jobs, and avoid foreign transaction fees. Most major UK banks—such as Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, and Santander—offer student-friendly accounts with minimal fees and helpful tools.

To open an account, you’ll typically need the following:

  • Your valid passport or national ID card

  • Proof of your UK address (your signed StudentFM tenancy agreement can be used)

  • A letter of enrolment or confirmation from your university or college

  • Your UK student visa or biometric residence permit (if applicable)

Some banks allow international students to begin the application online, so it’s worth checking if you can prepare your documents in advance. We also recommend booking an appointment at your chosen bank shortly after arrival to avoid long queues, especially during peak student periods in September.

If you’re unsure which bank is right for you, our StudentFM team can offer guidance or put you in touch with nearby branches that are experienced in helping international students.

Can you store my luggage if I have it delivered ahead of my arrival?
We understand that travelling internationally often means arriving before your accommodation is ready, or needing to ship some items ahead of your move-in date. At StudentFM, we do our best to help you feel settled from the moment you land.

Some of our properties can accept parcels or suitcases delivered in advance of your arrival, but this must be arranged ahead of time with your specific property’s management team. Storage space is limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so please contact us at least two weeks before sending any items.

If we’re able to accept your delivery, please make sure your full name, property name, and room reference number are clearly labelled on every item. You should also confirm the courier tracking and estimated delivery date with the property team. Please note that while we do our best to assist, StudentFM cannot take responsibility for any items lost or damaged during transit or before check-in unless previously agreed.

For longer-term storage solutions or if you arrive very early, we can also recommend local student storage companies who offer affordable and secure options for international arrivals.

I’ve moved into my room, what do I need to do now?
Welcome to your new home! Moving into your StudentFM accommodation marks the start of an exciting chapter. To help you settle in quickly and confidently, we recommend completing a few essential tasks after check-in:

  1. Connect to the internet – All StudentFM properties provide high-speed internet access. Check your welcome pack or ask a team member for login instructions.

  2. Log into the StudentFM App – The app allows you to view your tenancy documents, report maintenance issues, access emergency contact details, and receive updates about your building.

  3. Register with a local GP – Healthcare in the UK is provided through the NHS. You should register with a local doctor (GP) as soon as possible, especially if you’re here for longer than six months.

  4. Explore your local area – Familiarise yourself with the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, transport options, and campus buildings. Your property team can help with directions or suggestions.

  5. Introduce yourself to flatmates – Whether you’re in shared or studio accommodation, making a few friendly introductions goes a long way in creating a positive living environment.

  6. Sort your student discounts – Sign up for platforms like UNiDAYS, Student Beans, or TOTUM to access discounts on everything from food to travel and fashion.

If you have any questions or face any difficulties, our onsite teams are always happy to help. We want your stay to be enjoyable, safe, and stress-free—so don’t hesitate to reach out.
