Planning your move-in day? Here’s everything you need to know to help your check-in go as smoothly as possible.
You can move in on the official start date of your tenancy, which will be confirmed in your contract. Around 30 days before your tenancy begins, you’ll receive a detailed email with instructions on how to book your check-in slot. This will include the exact date and time of your appointment, your building address, and contact information for on-site staff.
Tip: Booking your slot as soon as you receive the email ensures you get a time that works best for you.
Each check-in slot lasts 15 minutes, which is enough time to unload your belongings and get settled in your room. While it might sound short, our move-in system is designed to keep things running smoothly and avoid overcrowding in the car park or reception areas.
If you need extra time to move in, you’re welcome to stay on-site after unloading, but you’ll need to move your vehicle to a designated parking area.
Yes, temporary parking is available at all our sites on move-in day. When you arrive, a member of staff will guide you to the unloading zone. After unloading, you’ll be directed to a nearby parking area if you’re staying longer.
Please note that on some campuses, long-term parking may not be available, so it’s important to check your specific property’s parking policy in advance.
To complete your check-in, you’ll need to present one form of valid photo ID. This can be:
A passport
A driver’s licence
A university student ID card
We’ll verify your identity and tenancy agreement at check-in, so please also have your tenancy confirmation email or StudentFM booking reference handy.
In most cases, we ask that you check in in person, as you’ll need to verify your identity and collect your room key. However, if you’re unable to attend your check-in slot due to travel issues or emergencies, please get in touch with our bookings team in advance to make alternative arrangements.
We understand travel delays happen. If you’re going to arrive after your scheduled time slot — or after standard office hours — simply contact your building manager or the StudentFM team as early as possible. We’ll do our best to arrange a late check-in.
Your room will be fully furnished, but you’ll need to bring your own:
Bedding (sheets, duvet, pillows)
Towels
Kitchenware (pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc.)
Toiletries
Laundry basket
Extension cords and chargers
Decorations to make your space feel like home!
If you’re coming from overseas or can’t carry everything at once, many students use delivery services like Amazon or Argos to send items directly to their new address.
Our on-site property management team will be available throughout check-in day to help with:
Finding your room
Reporting maintenance issues
General campus or local area advice
Safety or security questions
You can also reach us any time at 0333 444 1122 or email bookings@studentfm.co.uk.
If you notice any maintenance issues when you first arrive — such as damage, missing items, or something not working — please report it immediately to reception or through our online maintenance request form.
We aim to fix all move-in related issues within 24-48 hours.
Yes, you’re welcome to bring friends or family to help you settle in. However, due to limited space during check-in periods, we ask that you limit guests to 2-3 people and move your vehicle promptly after unloading.
Label your bags and boxes so they’re easy to unpack
Keep essentials easily accessible (like bedding, toiletries, chargers, and snacks)
Bring a reusable water bottle — move-in day can be hot and busy!
